SCENES FROM THE PLANET collects five smaller pieces drawn from the sixth of seven stages in Sentence of the Gods, MM's life-long project. Here reordered, these segments of the APHRODITE sequence take up, in turn, four Scandinavian countries; Eastern Arizona; the southernmost provinces of mainland China; Thailand; and seven Italian cities. In creates out of summertime Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark a pastoral ambiance. All, one of three poetic books that describe the southwestern USA, builds upon a subtext of Chinese landscape painting. Excelling explores the emergent world of a modern economic and political giant. Or contemplates a Buddhist kingdom. Divine allegorizes northern Italy by imitating the spirit of Dante, Tasso and Ariosto. Each of the five segments manifests a different mood-friendly, serene, difficult, subdued, amorous-of this complex, multicultural goddess of love, beauty and civility. Giorgio Gaetano Adami produced the painted jacket design for SCENES FROM THE PLANET: In, All, Excelling, Or, Divine. Two more titles by Madison Morrison are available from Sterling. SOLUNA: Collected Earlier Poems includes six collections of verse (Sleep, 0, Light, U, Need, A). Happening, his study of India, records ...I MM's peregrinations, which he interweaves with historical text, early travelogue and cultural anthropology .
MADISON MORRISON loves to travel and describe in situ the countries that he visits. Having recently returned from a world tour, on which he lectured and gave readings in Japan, Chile, Turkey, Greece, Russia and India, he is now entertaining four new subjects: the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds of Miami, South America and Iberia; Egypt's Alexandria, Cairo and temple-studded Nile; the Bible and the Holy Land; Homer and the Eastern Mediterranean. All this cosmography is required for the production of a new mode of cosmological epic. Based, like traditional cosmogonies, on the myth of measure that we call the days of the week, MM's universal epic will eventually comprise twenty-six books in verse and prose, variously cast in the forms of sonnet sequence, epyllion, and the poetry of dream, satire, travel writing and autobiography, along with several hitherto unknown genres. II A lofty and unprecedented life's work, II James Merrill called it.
